The Hurricane 7 is an IP network emulator, also referred to as a WAN emulator or WAN simulator. The forward error correction will focus on the 2022-1, 2022-2, and 2022-5/6 standards.
Let’s get started. The first step is to click on the link icon at the top. We’ll select all frames for something basic, then scroll down to the bottom where FEC is displayed. We check the checkbox, and you’ll see that the matrix type is offered at the top—1D and 2D. 2D refers to rows and columns. You can select SEMI 2022-1, 2022-2, and 2022-5/6. The default matrix size is 4×4, but if you hover your mouse over it, you’ll see the permissible range for matrix sizes.
Next, we proceed to the knockout matrix. Here, we have rows and columns, allowing us to select any row or column to simulate packet loss for specific packets. Any media stream packet can be selected to drop or retain. We can also apply this to an entire column or row by selecting FEC columns and rows. This can be done packet by packet for different FEC and media stream packets.
Once satisfied with the packets being dropped, we exit the knockout matrix, close the capability, and create the link. You will see FEC applied to the first link. At the top of the page, we hit the emulation start button (the green arrow), initiating the emulation and starting effect testing.
