Welcome to the Arcane 7 IP network emulator, also referred to as a WAN emulator or WAN simulator.
This video series covers how to use certain features on the Hurricane 7. In this episode, I’ll talk about how to change impairment values during an emulation, specifically how to set them up so that the impairment values change during emulation but are configured ahead of time.
Right now, I have one filter and one link. I’m going to double-click on that, and near the bottom, we have a capability called Dynamic. You can have up to 20 different intervals. I’ll leave it as the default of four. At the top, you see there are four different stages with different time intervals. I’ll leave the first one at 10, set the next one at 100, the third one at 66, and the last one at 100 again. Then I’ll check various boxes and select delay, jitter, and drop. For fixed delay, I want to increase by 10 milliseconds for each interval.
I’ll input 10, 20, 30, and 40 milliseconds across the stages. I’d do something similar for jitter and drop, but I won’t go into that detail here. In the first stage (10 seconds), there would be 10 milliseconds of delay. In the second stage (next 100 seconds), there would be 20 milliseconds of delay. The third stage would have 30, and the fourth stage would have 40. Then, I hit OK, close it, and confirm for the link. You can see that Dynamic is set up on the link. I hit Emulation, and that’s how you can use the Dynamic feature.
Besides Dynamic, we also have another feature that allows for similar capabilities, where impairment values can be changed during an emulation. Let me stop the current Dynamic test. I’ll double-click on the link, turn off Dynamic, and enable the toggle feature. Toggle has 20 paths and can use either a timer or packets. The timer is a fixed interval for each path, but each path can have different values. I’ll do a simple test with 10 milliseconds for the first path, then set the second path to 20 milliseconds.
Just as before, I can set different values for each path and choose as many impairments as I want. This example focuses on changing delay, but you can use any combination of impairment values for each path. Once configured, I hit OK, and toggle is now represented on the link. I start the emulation, and now impairment values are changing according to the toggle settings.
With Dynamic and Toggle, we provide two different ways to change impairment values during emulation. These can be programmed ahead of time to make repetitive tests and ensure that you cover every scenario you could imagine.
